About Societetshuset

Societetshuset in Hjo is one of Sweden's best-preserved wooden buildings from the spa resort era. With its unique architecture and historic role as a meeting place for high society, the house offers an atmosphere that breathes turn-of-the-century elegance and culture.

History of the House & the Place

Societetshuset in Hjo City Park

A living memory from Sweden's golden spa era

A place for elegance, health and socialising – since 1878

In the heart of the green Hjo City Park stands the beautiful Societetshuset – one of the country's best-preserved wooden buildings from the spa resort era. Built in 1878 as part of Hjo's emerging status as a water cure resort and summer destination, the house quickly became the heart of park life: a meeting place for music, dance, lectures and high society socialising.

With its Swiss-style timber architecture, wide verandas and grand ballroom, Societetshuset carried a refined charm that attracted well-to-do guests from across the country – not least from Stockholm and Gothenburg.

The Bathhouse – a temple of health

Next to Societetshuset stood the renowned Hjo Bathhouse, inaugurated as early as the 1840s but expanded as the park developed. Here, guests could enjoy the era's most modern health treatments:

  • Hot and cold baths
  • Seaweed baths and mud treatments
  • Showers and steam cabinets

All as part of the era's popular health trends, where water cures were believed to cleanse the body, calm the mind and heal a multitude of ailments.

The water cure resort – a Swedish spa ahead of its time

In the late 1800s, Hjo flourished as a water cure resort. The park – then a botanical garden – was carefully planned to give guests both tranquillity and exercise. They took daily walks, drank from the well, and followed strict routines of rest, music and light gymnastics.

To Hjo came doctors, authors, merchants and noblewomen alike, all with the same goal: to restore body and soul in beautiful, nature-close surroundings – something that today might be likened to a luxury spa hotel or retreat.

A cultural heritage that lives on

Today, Societetshuset is a listed heritage building – and a living venue for music, parties, café and events. The unique building, with its charm from bygone days, remains a place where people gather, just as they have for over 140 years.
